Thermal Bridging is a way to assess the various junctions and building element detailing that due to its detail or interaction with another element or material causes a higher (generally) heat loss than the main fabric area. With ever lowering U values and thermal performance improvements being made the thermal bridging elements become more significant.

Recently SAP2009 has requires a default ‘y value’ to be entered or standard accredited psi values used from the Appendix K. Appendix K values, however are very generic and if a developer wishes to take further advantage of calculating actual rates allowing them then to enter the figures in the SAP software then 3D modelling is required by a competent person.

This then can be used to lower the actual buildings heat loss making it easier to comply or otherwise allowing the developer to then further value engineer other elements or M&E giving a economic advantage over others.
