We have now been informed by our licensing body that where ACDs have been used previously in Appendix K calculations proof of the ACD installation will be required.

If we have undertaken SAPs and used the ACD rates for the Y value (via Appx K) you must confirm that the EST Enhanced or Standard ACDs are being undertaken on site otherwise at EPC (As-built stage) the y values must be taken down to default settings which may lead to regulation failure, EPC rating change and/or CSH level failure.

If you have any concerns with this email please contact us as a matter of urgency.

Clare Howe- Director at Code Green

Being a co-owner of a small business naturally means that you’re engaged with a multitude of additional tasks; anything from sorting out insurances, arranging payments and good old IT – thankfully I leave that to Jason Shaw, my business partner who manages to make me look like a technophobe!

As you would expect day to day tasks involve preparing estimates for potential projects, raising and chasing invoices, a fair degree of network marketing, attending project meetings, visiting sites and of course reviewing information submitted by project teams for assessment under BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes, etc. In terms of environmental assessment, I lead our team on the Non-Domestic projects such as Universities, College’s, Care Homes, etc which requires a high level of understanding of BREEAM, the BRE keep us on our toes by regularly enhancing the requirements in line with Building Regulations and other Industry Codes of Practice. One of our biggest challenges is reaching client’s at the very earliest stages of a project (concept and feasibility), there are so many credits that can be easily achieved with the right knowledge at the right time but if left too late in the process cannot be achieved making the higher BREEAM ratings harder to achieve and understandably more expensive. Having the right approach to BREEAM is the key!

This industry is changing all the time and keeping up with the changes can be quite a challenge, particularly when trying to guess what the Government is going to do next with regard to Zero Carbon, Feed in Tariffs and the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) to name but a few. One thing that I find really helps me focus on this is my lecturing role at Nottingham Trent University which I’ve done for the past two years on a sessional basis with a mix of final year students in construction related degree courses. Lecturing in itself can be quite a challenge but it can be quite rewarding too – one thing I would say to anyone is READ THE QUESTION! Having just spent several days marking exam papers and reading through reams of well revised answers it is really disappointing to note how many students miss the point. On a plus point the Environment & Sustainable Development module that I was involved with is now an integral part of all degree courses, students in the future will find it very hard to miss the point.

One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is meeting so many different people and building up good working relationships with new teams. It’s not to say things are always easy – I am led to believe that would be boring, however, when we are all working towards the same end goal and working as a team it can be a rewarding experience. I am also an active member of both the CIOB (Vice Chair of East Midlands committee – Chartered Institute of Building) and Chair of the Midlands IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment).

The majority of our work is environmental assessments such as BREEAM, Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH), Energy assessments (SAP, SBEM, EPC’s) as well as Passivhaus, LEED and general environmental consultancy and tailored training to suit your own needs.
